Markeater
Subterranean colonial grazer
The Markeater is a pale colonial cave organism that consumes the traces people leave underground. A colony moving through a passage strips away chalk marks, paint, scent, rope fiber, food residue, and the residue of every boot that passed, and an exploratory trail laid through Markeater ground is usually gone within hours.
Each individual is a few centimeters long, eyeless, with a soft segmented body and rasping mouthparts. The colony moves across stone as one continuous sheet, feeding on organic film and loose mineral dust, and it is drawn to anything foreign to the cave around it.
Its precision is what unsettles expeditions. A colony will remove a trail marker and leave the natural features beside it untouched, and it works over a route that people use far more thoroughly than one they do not. Prince Daer wrote of the subterranean passages where undocumented organisms erase exploratory trails within hours, and the Markeater is the organism that answers to his description. Whether its behavior reflects any kind of awareness is unknown.
It does not harm people directly. The danger is losing the way back. Expeditions lay trails with bare metal markers the colonies ignore and move with Scout-Class guides where they can. Colonies are thickest in the caverns beneath Inland Thazvaar that are theorized to lead to the Uncharted, and they are common in the tunnels the Darkroot leaves behind.
