Crystalhorn Behemoth

Deep ocean serpent

Origin
Planetary oceans; still theorized to issue from the waters surrounding the Permanently Uncharted Continent
Length
Estimated 1 to 5 kilometers
Weight
Estimated 1 to 30 million tonnes
Dormancy
Several hundred to several thousand years
Sightings
Extremely rare
Status
Extant; protected under planetary poaching law

The Crystalhorn Behemoth is an extraordinarily rare, limbless, serpent-like aquatic species. Its most distinctive feature is a massive horn-like structure of dense, white crystalline tissue set forward along the head, which emits a blinding glow when exposed to strong light. The body is long and flexible, with a prismatic skin texture that refracts ambient light into shifting colors, and the eyes are proportionally small, suggesting reliance on senses other than sight. Estimated body length reaches 1 to 5 kilometers and weight ranges from 1 to 30 million tonnes. No juvenile has ever been recorded, which points to an extremely long lifespan that has never been measured.

Overview

For most of recorded history it was believed to live only in the deep oceans surrounding Geba's Permanently Uncharted Continent. After the Warlord Eras it was rediscovered that individuals exist across the entire planet, many of them buried in seabeds and in the walls of coastal shelves, dormant for several hundred to several thousand years at a time. The Uncharted origin has still not been discarded. The species' size and strangeness, its concentration in the waters off that coast, and its habit of turning back toward those waters once it understands that one of its own has been beached all still point there. The working theory is that the individuals in the planet's other seas are wanderers and sleepers from those waters, with no separate homeland of their own.

Very little else is known. The species is not aggressive and is nearly impossible to hunt, and what it feeds on has never been established. It communicates through light and vibration. At distance the vibration moves through water and, when the animal is dormant, through the shelf rock itself. At close range it passes into a ship's hull and shakes the whole vessel violently with no storm or engine behind it, hard enough that plates of older ships work loose and cheaper instruments leave their mounts. Poachers use that same channel against it. By answering or imitating its signals they draw a Behemoth out of dormancy, beach it, and begin the harvest while it is still alive. Even then it takes several years to die. Faster methods have been tried, including charges stacked against the hide and packed into opened cuts in quantities that would break several fleets of heavy warships twice over, but the outer skin and the hardened structures beneath it take the blast and give almost nothing back. The harvest is the slow cutting of a living body that throws light and vibration the entire time, because nothing short of that cutting has ever been shown to end it.

Harvesting a Crystalhorn Behemoth is a serious poaching crime on every shore, without the regional exceptions that otherwise govern wildlife under Geban Law.

Kela Specimen

One dead individual was found beached on the northern coast of Kela during the Era of Absolute Expansion. It showed signs of external trauma, but the cause of death remains unknown and no predator of similar size has been confirmed. Its remains were harvested for experimental fuel in the rocket propulsion systems of the time, and its outer skin was studied for its structural resilience and partly used in basic armor prototypes, though no industrial replication was achieved. The preserved horn was taken to the imperial capital on the Geban Continent and placed in the center of a civic structure, where it remains publicly visible and is often mistaken for a monument or an architectural remnant.

Remaining Materials

All remaining fuel derived from the Kela specimen's tissues is owned and heavily guarded by Veykar Propulsion and Imperia Research. The material available from this single historic specimen is finite and irreplaceable, meaning every piece made from it is one piece closer to the last that will ever exist without a new crime being committed. Clothing and accessories crafted from Crystalhorn material, including the shoes worn by Lux Notera, are among the rarest luxury items on the planet. Any Crystalhorn tissue appearing after the Warlord Eras that cannot be traced to the Kela remains is treated as poached material.

Status

The species is extant. No living specimen has been captured for study, and none has been observed long enough to produce a complete account of its life cycle. Most of the known population lies buried in shelves and seabeds, including those off inhabited coasts, away from the open water of the Uncharted trenches. Dormant, it is beyond the reach of anything the relay system or current technology can monitor until it answers a light or a vibration that was never meant for it.
