Emberjaw Sentinel

Manalheim volcanic giant

Origin
Manalheim (southern volcanic tropics and geothermal zones)
Length
40 to 60 meters
Weight
600 to 1,000 tonnes
Lifespan
Up to 3,000 years
Maturity
1,000 to 1,500 years

The Emberjaw Sentinel is a very large lounging animal of Manalheim's volcanic tropics, with armored, ember-hued jaws and a scale-plated body 40 to 60 meters long weighing 600 to 1,000 tonnes. Photo-thermosynthetic microbes and osmotic systems that harness geothermal heat adapt it to ash storms and let it sustain its frame without the constant predation that animals of comparable size elsewhere on the planet require. It lives up to 3,000 years, matures slowly over 1,000 to 1,500 years, and reproduces every 100 to 200 years, and it maintains geothermal niches for smaller organisms that depend on the thermal zones it occupies.

It is passive toward other species and ignores human settlements, even failed hunts directed at it. Toward its own kind it turns hyper-aggressive, and in these clashes it launches into mid-air twists and crashes that trigger landslides audible 10 to 20 kilometers away, with vibrations felt up to 50 kilometers from the impact site. A major engagement risks seismic catastrophe, and modern guidance limits all observation to remote monitoring.
