The Field Howler is a semi-domesticated scavenger breed of the Plains Smilohound that thrives in the refuse zones around Inland Thazvaar and Berinu settlements. It stands 2.3 to 2.6 meters at the rear and weighs 700 to 850 kg, and its short, broad skull and compact musculature suit it to scavenging heat-baked waste. Scavenging wears its upper canines short and blunt.

It guards its scavenging claims aggressively with persistent high-pitched yelps and defensive calls, which deter predators, though it rarely engages humans directly. Thazvaari and Berinese communities tolerate it because it suppresses invasive species and warns of threats. No one feeds or owns it, and everyone benefits from it as a natural perimeter warning: its calling around a settlement means nothing larger has moved in, and the absence of its howling is often the first sign that something has.
