Darkroot

Subterranean burrower

Origin
Geba (planet-wide, subsurface caverns)

The Darkroot is a limbless burrower native to Geba's subsurface caverns, with a body adapted for continuous excavation through deep strata. Its tunnels form ecosystems that house other subterranean species, including the Neron.

It is non-aggressive, and the danger it poses to explorers comes from the structural collapse its digging causes. It destabilizes gallery systems and cavern networks that may have been stable for centuries before it passed through them. Early Geban subsurface expeditions during the Era of Absolute Expansion feared it for the unpredictable damage it did to exploration routes, and modern expeditions treat signs of recent Darkroot burrowing as a warning that the structural integrity of the surrounding caverns can no longer be assumed.
