Furrowback

Geban draft and dairy animal

Origin
Berinu (domesticated; now kept planet-wide)
Shoulder Height
1.8 to 2.4 meters
Weight
900 to 1,600 kg
Lifespan
25 to 35 years

The Furrowback is the most common farm animal on Geba, a heavy, docile draft and dairy animal first domesticated on the plains of Berinu. Most of the planet's milk, much of its leather, and a large share of its field labor still come from it.

It is named for the broad, ridged back that takes a yoke or a pack saddle without padding. It has a thick neck, short curved horns, and split hooves that hold in wet ground, and it works through heat and constant rain without losing condition.

It is calm, learns routines quickly, and follows a lead animal, so a single handler can work a large herd. Berinese households keep them alongside their fields and markets, and a family's herd is usually counted as part of its wealth.

The Furrowback spread across the planet with Berinese families as they married into every other population, and it is now kept on every governed continent with a temperate climate. It does poorly in deep cold, which is why Kela relies on the Boretheris Titan and the Snowhauler instead.
