Kelan

People of Kela

Alias
None
Origin
Kela (frozen plains, polar shelves, cliffs)

Physiology

The Kelan are compact, lean, and built for endurance in extreme cold and high altitude. They resemble the Ngorrhali in every way except scale, with the same faces and the same skin tone. The Kelan are much shorter and carry less mass, their frames compressed and stripped down for polar terrain. Where the Ngorrhali grew massive under the stratospheric conditions of Ngorrhal's passes, the Kelan adapted to Kela's frozen expanses by becoming smaller, tighter, and harder to kill through exposure.

Capability

The Kelan are skilled climbers with strong endurance in cold-weather operations. These abilities were distinctive in an earlier era and are no longer distinctive in the modern one. Ngorrhali techniques accomplish the same functions at greater scale, and Yuvaari techniques accomplish them with greater versatility, so what the Kelan do is an inferior version of what both populations already provide. The Kelan remain capable, but they are redundant in a world where the alternatives are always available, because Ngorrhali and Yuvaari are present in every major population center on the planet.

Kela's Population

Ethnic Kelans represent less than two percent of Kela's 700 million inhabitants. The overwhelming majority of the population came from somewhere else. The engineers are Jeyrhan or Geban. The bioengineers are Jeyrhan. The ex-warlords are Thazvaari. The criminals are from everywhere. The deep sea infrastructure was built by outside contractors. The autonomous colonies established in the Era of Late Conquest serve as refuges for outcasts and fugitives seeking distance from imperial oversight, and the people who run them are rarely Kelan. Every notable accomplishment associated with Kela comes from migrant populations operating on a continent the Kelan happen to inhabit.

The Kelan are hardy, enduring, and adapted to an environment that most populations would not survive. Their resilience turns deadly cold into home. These are admirable traits, though they are not distinctive when measured against any population that has produced something beyond the ability to persist.
