The Uncharted Deep

Beyond All Sounding

Type
Abyssal ocean, depth beyond measure
Borders
The northern edge of the Uncharted, along Kela and the Teytan Coast
Hazard
Navigation and electronics fail on approach
Average Depth
Never read, no signal comes back from it; believed the deepest water on Geba, and dark enough from above that crews say it turns the water black
Temperature
Never stable, a warm day cut by a freezing wind, a cool breeze followed by a scorching wave out of nowhere in the next
Winds
Without pattern, from dead calm to violent in a single breath; no reading holds

The Uncharted Deep is the water along the northern edge of the Uncharted, reaching east from Kela past the Teytan Coast, and it is the incomprehensibly deep water of the planet, deeper by far than the deepest ground anyone has ever measured. It answers to the same rules as the continent it borders. Navigation and electronics fail as a vessel draws near, and pilots treat that failure as the last warning to turn back before it is too late.

Nothing that has gone far into it has returned to describe it. It is not that the Deep is dangerous in the ordinary way a cold sea is dangerous. It is that the Deep, like the Uncharted, does not permit the instruments that would let anyone know where they are, and the water and the weather close the door behind them.

Marine Life

the Blackwing Titanbird rides the coastal boundary between northern Thazvaar and the Uncharted here, and no one has followed one out over the Deep and come back to say where it went.
