Kelan Ocean

The Frozen Sea

Type
Polar ocean, mostly frozen
Borders
Kela to the south, northeastern Inland Thazvaar
Character
Solid ice across nearly its whole extent; open water only at the margins
Average Depth
About 42 km where it still runs liquid; frozen solid across most of its extent, where no signal returns through the ice
Temperature
Freezing, roughly -35°C (-31°F) to 0°C (32°F) at the open margins
Winds
Hard polar wind, roughly 90 to 160 km/h (55 to 100 mph), funneled into tunnels off the ice

The Kelan Ocean is the name given only to the water that still moves. Most of what the name covers has not been liquid in living memory. Where Kela's coast gives way to open water the ocean freezes solid and stays that way, and the Kelan Glacial Plain that makes up the greater part of the continent is not built on the ocean. It is the ocean, frozen in place.

The scale is difficult to hold in the mind. A traveler stranded at the center of the plain is not stranded near anything, with flat unbroken ice running tens of thousands of kilometers in every direction. The water that still runs survives at the edges, along Kela's northwestern border with Inland Thazvaar, where the frozen and the unfrozen halves of the same ocean meet, and the sea reaches from there down along the northeastern Thazvaar shore.
